The 2018 season started with the sudden passing of Chris Potter, President of our association. Chris spent countless hours helping to improve this organization and softball in Western New York. He will always be remembered by his bright smile and endless laughter, along with a tremendous softball knowledge.

I have assumed the role as President for this season, as I had the role before Chris.

Please remember the game is for the girls. Simple motto is to let the players play, coach's coach and the umpires umpire.

Fan involvement should be to support your daughters. Parents need to refrain from confronting the officals before, during and after games. The parent will not like the result of violating this policy. Everyone should feel safe at the game. If you feel the umpire did great, tell them so. Lets keep everything positive.

Lancaster Heat

From August 7 through August 16 Lancaster/Depew Heat will be holding tryouts for 2018 travel softball. The specific dates for each age group are listed below.  All tryout dates will begin at 6pm and will take place on diamonds #1 and #1A at Walden Pond Park - Lancaster.  If we encounter inclement weather the tryout will be moved to the batting cages for that day. The tournament/travel age divisions are currently 10u, 12u, 14u, 16u, and 18u.  A player’s eligibility for a particular age group is determined by the girl’s age as of January 1, 2018.  Girls can begin playing for the Heat at age 9 (though if a girl is deemed to be both physically and emotionally ready for travel ball she may try out for The Heat at age 8). The Heat will try to field at least one team in each age group with a preference of at least two teams (a Senior team, followed by a younger Junior team).

We are looking for players in all age groups (10u: birth years 2007/2008 and younger, 12u birth years 2005/2006, 14u birth years 2003/2004, 16u birth years 2001/2002, 18u birth years 1999/2000) as well as anyone who may be interested in coaching a Heat travel team. For those of you who still have not read the updated rules here are some of the frequently asked questions asked of me since the first meeting.

League Fees are $500

This consists of:

• $150 for insurance
• $100 for sanction numbers (NSA, ASA, USSSA)
• $75 for game balls (12 games + playoffs)
• $25 League Fee
• $50 for Umpire Fees NOT paid at the field. Umpire's fees are $44 per game. You pay $40 at the field. This covers the extra $4 per team per game.
• $100 escrow

Common scenario:

Insurance and NSA sanction number was paid for in July. Cost was $175. Team played in the NFL the previous season and still has $100 sitting in escrow. Remaining fees for that team this year willl be $225.

Rosters: (this is verbatim from the rules)

• Maximum number of players on a team roster is 18.
• Cut-off date for age groups January 1st.
• A player may only appear on one team as a primary player and one additional team as a substitute. SHE MUST BE IN A DIFFERENT DIVISION. A 12U player can substitute for a 14U team NOT another 12U team.
• A substitute is a roster player on another team in the NFL and can only sub for 1 team for a total of 4 games including regular season & playoffs. The “spirit” of the rule is to use substitute players to avoid forfeits.
• A substitute player cannot pitch
• You cannot use a substitute player unless you are down to 9 players or less. A player that is playing in the GOLD DIVISION cannot substitute “down” and play in the SILVER DIVISION.
• NOTE: Players playing on teams in the Wednesday Night “Double-Header Division” are deemed to be 16U players regardless of their actual age eligibility (for league purposes only).
• All teams that use subs must contact their division coordinator & opponent before the game.
• PLAYOFFS: Players can only sub up.
• Managers are responsible to complete the NSA online registration process. Those players not on an official NSA roster or official substitutes should be sent to the division coordinator. Changes to the roster must be reported to league coordinators.
• Penalty for playing with non-rostered players or having a substitute pitch is forfeiture of the game.
